We are having problems all across the Jr. High Social Studies classes with getting our currents done on time. Many of you asked if you could work on the first current event with a partner and I agreed thinking that it would help aide in the presentation of the project. However many of you are failing to communicate with your partners and are not prepared to present on your day. If students continue to show they are unable to work with partners, I will discontinue partner presentations and expect every student to work and present alone.
*******Remember failure to turn in your project on time results in a deduction of 10% of your grade each day it is past due. Also we need to turn in our homework assignments on time or they too will result in a 10% deduction of your grade. ********

Attention Parents!!!!!
Our Sunday Breakfast is coming up October 19th. I will be sending out a letter soon in order to set up a meeting to create a menu and assign duties. I'm also still in need of a room parent for the year. I understand that many of you cannot take on the long range responsibilities of the position but I would appreciate if someone can help out for the next month. In addition to the Sunday breakfast on the 19th, we also have the Halloween Carnival on the 31st. At the Carnival, our class will be hosting a game and also participating in the door decorating contest. Both of these events provide excellent opportunities to earn service hours.

Current Event Guidelines
Current Event Guidelines
Mr. Johnson
6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Social Studies
The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure student understanding of the basic concepts of the news in order to provide a meaningful classroom discussion. Students are responsible for one current event per trimester. At the end of the year each student should have a total of three current events: one local, one national, and one international. Sixth graders will always present their current events in class on Tuesday, Seventh graders on Wednesday, and Eighth graders on Thursday.
Stories can be obtained from printed media (newspapers, magazines) or the internet*. Current event summaries should include the following information and should be written in paragraph format:
ÿ What happened?
ÿ Who was involved?
ÿ Where did the event occur?
ÿ When did it happen?
ÿ What is the importance of the event?
ÿ What is your personal reaction?
ÿ What was the source of your information? **(No, the National Inquirer or any similar magazine is not a good source)
The following topics are acceptable:
¸ Politics (local, national, or international)
¸ History
¸ Economics
¸ Social concerns (crime, poverty, homelessness, etc)
I do not want sports or entertainment stories.
Remember, I want to see your interpretation of the story: simply rewriting the article is not acceptable.
* If your story is obtained from the internet, it needs to be from a credible and reliable news website like cnn.com, reuters.com, latimes.com.
** Please bring in a hard copy of your story.

It's been awhile
Sorry for the delay on posting anything new. In the coming days I will be posting the schedules for the 1st trimester of current event presentations. Reminder that 6th graders will present on Tuesdays, 7th graders on Wednesdays, and 8th graders on Thursdays.
Please remember to wear your PE uniforms on Tuesdays and Thursdays along with athletic footwear. In addition, remember all students are required to wear the complete uniform on Fridays which includes a black tie for boys and the oxford tie for the girls.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend and I am looking forward to another great week of school.
